Kohlberg’s 6 Stages of Moral Development
Answer the following questions for (a) your current self, and (b) your eight-year-old self...
1. Should Heinz have stolen the drug? Why / Why not?
2. Would it change anything if Heinz didn't love his wife? Why / Why not?
3. Would your answer change if the person was a not his wife, but a stranger? Why / Why not?
4. If the wife died, should the police arrest the druggist for murder? Why / Why not?
1. Should Heinz have stolen the drug? Why / Why not?
My current self: No, it is unlawful.
My 8-year-old self: Due to devastation of losing someone, I would be tempted to.
2. Would it change anything if Heinz didn't love his wife? Why / Why not?
My current self: Depends on the relationship and how connect they are, whether there are tamariki, mokopuna involved.
My 8-year-old self: No, as an 8-yr old I believe he would still save his wife.
3. Would your answer change if the person was a not his wife, but a stranger? Why / Why not?
My current self: Unlikely to change.
My 8-year-old self: Unlikely to change.
4. If the wife died, should the police arrest the druggist for murder? Why / Why not?
My current self: If there is lawful cause for murder, of course. Reality is this does happen where people cannot afford treatment for various reason and life takes its course.
My 8-year-old self: Yes, because they are ripping people off.
1. Should Heinz have stolen the drug? Why / Why not?
If you've exhausted all avenues to get the drug legally, and your last resort would be stealing - then yes. That level of love, especially your spouse would make you do anything to get them better. Heinz would know he's doing it illegally, but you'd rather someone you love live a little longer and deal with the consequences later. In Heinz' mind, he's already justified his actions.
2. Would it change anything if Heinz didn't love his wife? Why / Why not?
Maybe. Maybe not.
3. Would your answer change if the person was a not his wife, but a stranger? Why / Why no
There's a slight possibility I would change my answer - because its a stranger. I would try and help in other ways.
4. If the wife died, should the police arrest the druggist for murder? Why / Why not?
No, there's no legal grounds to arrest him.
1. Should Heinz have stolen the drug? Why / Why not?
I would say yes, even though I know it is lawfully wrong, when one of your loved ones is facing death, I would want to do anything to help them get well or have an easier departure from their body. I would also consider what the quality of her life would be if she did take the medication and live.
As an 8-year-old, I probably would say no, because it is wrong to steal.
2. Would it change anything if Heinz didn't love his wife? Why / Why not?
I think this would depend on the nature of the relationship and family dynamics. I would assume that if he were married, even if he was not in love with the woman, he would probably still care for her and want the best for her, in which case, he would still do it. However, if they hated each other or the relationship was super toxic, or if he was not a kind/loving person, perhaps he wouldn't have the motivation to go ahead with it.
As an 8-year-old, I think the answer would still be no because it's against the law to steal and they would be scared of getting in trouble.
3. Would your answer change if the person were not his wife, but a stranger? Why / Why not?
I think probably yes, because love is what motivates one to move mountains for someone else; taking such a risk for a stranger would not make sense.
As above, my 8-year-old self would still say no out of fear of getting into trouble.
4. If the wife died, should the police arrest the druggist for murder? Why / Why not?
I would say no, because he wasn't breaking the law by selling the medication for profit. Even though I think it's incredibly unfair and unjust that companies can make so much $$ from the unwellness and death of people, and that people without money suffer more from this. It still wasn't the personal fault of the druggist that the woman died, even though if I were in his shoes, I would have sold it for cheaper.
As an 8-year-old, I would have said yes because he could have saved the woman's life by selling it to the man for cheaper, but he didn't, and she died, so he should be punished.
I would see the justification of Heinz steeling the drug for his wife as I would do that for my child or partner . I would rather know I had done every thing possible to save my loved one, even go to jail. I would be happier knowing they could live their life even if it ment I wasn’t in it. As an eight year old the through of stealing or go to prison would of terrified me
Yes if he didn’t love his wife then the situation would be different as he was motivated . by love.
.Yes if she wasn’t his wife that he loved the motivation would be there.
If his wife had died the police shouldn’t arrest the druggist as it not illegal to sell a product for profit. . As an eight year old I would said yes put the druggist in jail as would of thought he deserved it
1. Should Heinz have stolen the drug?
a) Lawfully, no he should not have stolen it however morally since the pharmacist was exploiting him and other sick people he was choosing who was able to live/die therefore the moral good outweighs the lawful bad
b) No, because it is against the law
2. Would it change anything if Heinz didn't love his wife?
a) No, as he was conducting equal opportunity. Money and law as a concept has vastly withheld individual's abilities to live a better life. Although, love is a strong motivator.
b) yes because love is a good reason
3. Would your answer change if the person was a not his wife, but a stranger?
a) I believe same as above however the reason would be needed to create a more informed opinion
b) yes because he doesn't know the stranger and doesn't love them
4. If the wife died, should the police arrest the druggist for murder?
a) Not murder, but extortion and negligence
b) yes because someone died because of someone else's actions
1. Should Heinz have stolen the drug? Why / Why not?
a, What a terrible situation to find ones self in. If all other avenues had been exhausted, and there was a possibility of saving a loved ones life, then yes, I would.
b, As an 8 year old, I'm not sure if I would have understood the gravity of the situation of consequences, but knew that stealing was wrong, so would not have stolen the drug.
As a side note I asked all three of my children (aged 9, 11 & 13) what they would do in this instance, and they all said yes. The eldest hesitated and we talked about concequences, but then decided yes.
2. Would it change anything if Heinz didn't love his wife? Why / Why not?
a, Oh, this is a harder question, I'm going with possibly. For me it would depend on the circumstances of our relationship/family.
b, As an 8 year old, this would be a no again, as my understanding would be the same.
3. Would your answer change if the person was a not his wife, but a stranger? Why / Why not?
a, This is a situation that we see all to frequently on the news or within the community, people dying as they don't have finding available for potentially life saving drugs. I haven't stolen for them, so this would be a no.
b, Again this would be a no.
4. If the wife died, should the police arrest the druggist for murder? Why / Why not?
a, This is not the pharmacists fault, so no. However, I do wish that there was more transparency around profitability / exploitation of pharmaceutical companies.
b, As an eight year old, I probably wouldn't have understood the situation beyond the a simplistic idea being that the pharmacist didn't supply the life saving drugs, and someone ended up dying, so maybe yes.
1. Should Heinz have stolen the drug? Why/Why not?
My current self: I would probably not steal it, because it could cause more problems for both me and my wife. Also, one medicine might not necessarily save her life.
My 8-year-old self: I might have thought Heinz should steal it, since as a child I may not fully see the long-term consequences of the action.
2. Would it change anything if Heinz didn’t love his wife? Why/Why not?
My current self: I don’t think it would change, because I would still see more problems coming from stealing the drug.
My 8-year-old self: Love would probably feel like the main reason. As a child, I might think only about the short-term outcome and act based on love in the moment.
3. Would your answer change if the person was not his wife, but a stranger? Why/Why not?
My current self: My answer would not change, because the consequences of stealing are still the same.
My 8-year-old self: I probably wouldn’t think Heinz should steal it, because there would be no strong motivation and the action could bring fearful consequences.
4. If the wife died, should the police arrest the druggist for murder? Why/Why not?
My answer: No. The legal system does not treat this situation as murder, because it is not directly about morality but about the law. 8 year old may think the person should go to jail as it may appear to be the direct cause from the child's view.
present self;
1. Should Heinz have stolen the drug? Why / Why not? Yes, I believe ethically its wrong but morally if he is able to save his wife he can try.
2. Would it change anything if Heinz didn't love his wife? Why / Why not? Yes. Risking his freedom and getting caught for someone he doesnt love might not be worth his risk. However if they had children then worth the risk as the childrens mum would live.
3. Would your answer change if the person was a not his wife, but a stranger? Why / Why not? No. I wouldnt risk this for a stranger.
4. If the wife died, should the police arrest the druggist for murder? Why / Why not? No. The drug was available for purchase.
8 year old self;
1. Should Heinz have stolen the drug? Why / Why not? Yes. I think as an 8 year old Id want to save someone I love.
2. Would it change anything if Heinz didn't love his wife? Why / Why not? Yes. I wouldnt steal for someone I didnt love.
3. Would your answer change if the person was a not his wife, but a stranger? Why / Why not? No. I wouldnt have done this for a stranger. Yes Id have been sad for them but Id not have stolen for them.
4. If the wife died, should the police arrest the druggist for murder? Why / Why not? I would think yes as an 8 year old. Keeping medicine from someone in need because they want more money is wrong.
Current self
1. Should Heinz have stolen the drug? Why / Why not? No, because you go to all this and you end up in jail and his wife is alone. or what if it doesnt work? then what?
2. Would it change anything if Heinz didn't love his wife? Why / Why not? No, nothing changes it.
3. Would your answer change if the person was a not his wife, but a stranger? Why / Why not? No, because I wouldnt do it for a stranger
4. If the wife died, should the police arrest the druggist for murder? Why / Why not? No, because the druggist isn't keeping the drug from him by choice. Heinz couldnt afford it.
Currrent Self:
1. Yes. Achieving the goal of saving a loved one, outweighs the consequences. Ethically it is wrong. But morally, it was his last resort.
2. Possibly. However, it would be a test to ones moral judgement. Could Heinz live with that burden if he did not help her? I could not. Would he resent her if he did, and then was punished? Absolutely.
3. Sadly yes. Heinz would not put himself at risk, what would he get out of it other than prison. I would like to say his heroic behaviour would step in, but realistically... No. Would never stop trying to find another alternative though.
4. No. Not his fault the wife got sick. But hopefully the result will encourage him to lower his prices.
8 year old self:
1. Yes. Fear would be hisitant but the consequence of that person no longing living would prevail.
2. No. The thought of someone dying will be more important.
3. Possibly, Fear would take over more than wanting to help.
4. Yes. He had the power to save her, and did not.
Current self
1. Should Heinz have stolen the drug? Why / Why not? - No because if everyone did this, there would be chaos and social disorder. Ideally, the pharmacist would not sell the drug for this amount of money (however, it's likely to do with a pharmaceutical company's price up the chain), but crime is not the correct response.
2. Would it change anything if Heinz didn't love his wife? Why / Why not? No - it's irrelevant.
3. Would your answer change if the person was a not his wife, but a stranger? Why / Why not? No - it's irrelevant
4. If the wife died, should the police arrest the druggist for murder? Why / Why not? No - ultimately, it was not a direct result of his actions.
8 year old self
1. Should Heinz have stolen the drug? Why / Why not? I think my 8-year old self would have been torn about this because, by that age, I feel I would have had a pretty good understanding of law and order. Possibly, however, I may have felt that he probably should have, to save his wife.
2. Would it change anything if Heinz didn't love his wife? Why / Why not? I think his love for his wife was a key driver of his behaviour, so, without justification, I think my 8-year old self would have viewed things differently.
3. Would your answer change if the person was a not his wife, but a stranger? Why / Why not? Yes, as above.
4. If the wife died, should the police arrest the druggist for murder? Why / Why not? Again, I think I would have been torn here. I might have been swayed by this simplistic argument at this age, rather than from a viewpoint of social control/good.
1.
a- Yes, saving a loved one's life is more important than the social rules, as long as it means not harming anyone else, and has exhausted every other option. As the pharmacist is clearly milking the system.
b- I would have struggled with the idea of stealing, as I knew it was bad. But if it were to save someone I loved, I would have done it.
2.
a- I think it wouldn't have changed things; she was still someone close to him, and even if he didn't love her, he would have still cared for her.
b- As a kid, this may have affected my choice. I would still tell someone I trust to help, but I may not have taken such risks.
3.
a- I think it would have changed things, as you wouldn't take as many risks. Personally, I would advocate for change and try and get the word out that the pharmacist is doing these things and try and get justice. I'm not sure if I would steal.
b- I probably wouldn't have stolen, but I would have talked to people I trusted about it to see if anyone could help.
4.
a- I think there should be some form of responsibility, but not murder. This is also a government issue; there should be regulations for drug prices, and anyone seen taking advantage of the system should be fined or lose their practising license.
b- Yes, because his actions caused someone to die
Current Self
1. Should Heinz have stolen the drug? Why / Why not?
Yes and no. His intentions were justified but perhaps there were other ways to get the drug.
2. Would it change anything if Heinz didn't love his wife? Why / Why not?
No. A human life is still a human life.
3. Would your answer change if the person was a not his wife, but a stranger? Why / Why not?
No. A human life is still a human life.
4. If the wife died, should the police arrest the druggist for murder? Why / Why not?
I think if the drug would have cured the wife then the chemist should hold some responsibility. However, i don't think a murder charge is the correct punishment.
8 Year old Self
1. Should Heinz have stolen the drug? Why / Why not?
Yes. Because he loved his wife and she needed it.
2. Would it change anything if Heinz didn't love his wife? Why / Why not?
Maybe. Because if he didn't love his wife then maybe she was mean.
3. Would your answer change if the person was a not his wife, but a stranger? Why / Why not?
Yes. Strangers die all the time. I wouldn't want to get in trouble for someone i don't know.
4. If the wife died, should the police arrest the druggist for murder? Why / Why not?
No. But he should be punished for putting profit over people.
Should Heinz have stolen the drug? Why / Why not?
a) It's a terrible dilemma and I absolutely understand that he ignored societal rules and stole the drug, However, underlying is a bigger injustice, that of withholding treatment for personal profit. By stealing the drug for his wife, the wider issue isn’t addressed.
b) I probably would have been very afraid of punishment but possibly more afraid of losing a loved one.
2. Would it change anything if Heinz didn't love his wife? Why / Why not?
3.Would your answer change if the person was a not his wife, but a stranger? Why / Why not?
a) Yes & no. Every life is precious and the withholding of treatment for profit unjust, so I"m ok with stealing the drug for any person, a loved one, not so loved one or a stranger (Q3) as an act of activism if nobody else gets harmed…tricky balance
However, at this stage in my life, my personal risk assessment of stealing the drug would be different. I would look for alternatives with less personal risk, like fundraising, media campaign…
b) As an 8 year old, my fear of personal consequences would have probably outweighed my sense of broader injustice. I do remember feeling anger as a child for the “unfairly treated underdog”, often animals.
4. If the wife died, should the police arrest the druggist for murder? Why / Why not?
a) No, whilst his behaviour is morally wrong and unethical, it’s most likely legal in our capitalist system. Interesting discussion though.
b) Not sure, I think I believed in a just system at that age and would have possibly thought police would arrest somebody who refused to help a dying person.
1. should heinz have stolen the drug?
a. Yes, I would have in that situation. Saving lives feels more important than following the rules.
b. I would have been torn. I know stealing is wrong and had consequences, but another part of me would risk it to save a life.
2. Would it change anything if Heinz didn't love his wife?
a. Not really, Even if he didn't love her, saving a life seems like the right move.
b. In this situation, I would break the rules for someone I cared about.
Would your answer change if the person was a stranger?
a. It would feel harder emotionally, but I would still try to help if I felt it was worth it.
b. I would still want to help, but If there was no emotional attachment, I dont think i would risk it.
4. If the wife died, should the cops arrest the druggist for murder?
a. No, it wasnt the druggist's intention to kill the wife. The only thing killing anything are his prices.
b. I would want justice but part of me would feel like it wasnt his intention.
1. Should Heinz have stolen the drug? Why / Why not? Yes, he had no other choice. He tried doing the right thing first, so it was for good intentions even if it meant him being arrested.
2. Would it change anything if Heinz didn't love his wife? Why / Why not? Possibly, he has more motivation to do so but my answer would not change if he did not love her.
3. Would your answer change if the person was a not his wife, but a stranger? Why / Why not? No. i think he did the right thing.
4. If the wife died, should the police arrest the druggist for murder? Why / Why not? Not for murder, i think an investigation would need to be done around the price and not offering other options of support it was unethical.
Answer the following questions for (a) your current self, and (b) your eight-year-old self...
1. Should Heinz have stolen the drug? Why / Why not?
a) I fully endorse stealing the drug for two reasons; to save the wife's life and because the chemist's cost of 10x the production price is criminal in my eyes.
b) at 8 years old I would be too scared to break the law but would hopefully talk through the idea of stealing the drug with another adult who could do it.
2. Would it change anything if Heinz didn't love his wife? Why / Why not?
a) I don't think it would change things if he didn't love his wife, out of respect for the love they use to have and I am sure he still cares for her a lot.
b) at 8yrs old I think the same as my previous 8yr old answer applies.
3. Would your answer change if the person was a not his wife, but a stranger? Why / Why not?
a) I would like to think the answer shouldn't change if it was a stranger, but I don't think I would break the law like this for a stranger.
b) my 8yr old self would not break the law out of fear.
4. If the wife died, should the police arrest the druggist for murder? Why / Why not?
a) If it were possible to arrest a chemist for making medicine so unaffordable that people could not buy it and people were dying, then they should be arrested for manslaughter.
b) 8yr old self would say - yes arrest them for murder.
1. Should Heinz have stolen the drug? Why / Why not?
35: Absolutely. Heinz's initial plan was not theft. His initial plan was legitimate purchase. Intent as well as actions matters to me. Heinz has determined that the benefits of his actions (saving his wife's life) are of greater than the consequences of theft (non defined punishment via law).
8: No. Stealing is wrong.
2. Would it change anything if Heinz didn't love his wife? Why / Why not?
35: No. Love doesn't need to be the only motivation to save a life. If it is within his ability and he is choosing of his own free will.
8: No. Stealing is wrong. Especially for someone you don't like.
3. Would your answer change if the person was a not his wife, but a stranger? Why / Why not?
35: No. Saving a life is always justified as long as you aren't causing harm.
8: No. Stealing is wrong.
4. If the wife died, should the police arrest the druggist for murder? Why / Why not?
35: No. Withholding action in this instance isn't illegal. Murder is a crime and is bound by the legal/ethical system not by morality.
8: Yes. He should have given Heinz the medicine.
1; a; My current self would indeed steal the drug so I would agree that Heinz should haver stolen the drug, simply because it would save his wife and the druggist was not being fair. My 8 yr old self would most likely say no do not steal the drug, although if the drug was for a parent of my 8 yr old self maybe that would change my answer.
2: My current self, if Heinz did not love his wife, possibly should still steal the drug out of good faith towards his once loved wife, maybe she has children to stay alive for. My 8 year old self, my "whats in it for me" attitude may result in not stealing the drug if i personally did not love this person anymore.
3: My current self- my answer to steal the drug would not change if it were for a stranger, I think if put in this position I would simply want to help the best way I knew how. My 8 year old self, most likely be too scared to take such a risk for a stranger.
4: My current self- the druggist is not the reason why the wife is sick so no he should avoid a murder charge, my 8 yr old self, could possibly see it as the druggists fault as he had the chance to save her.

Answer the following questions for (a) your current self, and (b) your eight-year-old self...
Current self.
1. Should Heinz have stolen the drug? Why / Why not?
Normal societal conventions would dictate that no he shouldn't steal but the personal effect on Heinz would potentially override societal norms. This issue delves into real life conflict over potentially lifesaving drugs and treatments being unaffordable or unavailable in your own country but available in others. Unfortunately, our society is that of a money based one.
2. Would it change anything if Heinz didn't love his wife? Why / Why not?
Heinz potentially wouldn't have stollen the drug if he didn't love his wife. I guess it depends on how much he still cares for her as a person, or if they had children that he wanted her to live for.
3. Would your answer change if the person was a not his wife, but a stranger? Why / Why not?
This becomes the catch 22 of a monetary society. Most people wouldn't risk going to prison for a complete stranger but would hold compassion for those in this dilemma.
4. If the wife died, should the police arrest the druggist for murder? Why / Why not?
If this was a societal expectation, then there would be a lot of people being arrested in today's world. Technically he didn't cause the disease or murder the wife, so the blame doesn't sit with him but personally I don't understand how drug developers cn justify how much they charge for some drugs. I understand there is cost in development of then drugs but surely not to the excess that they are charging.
Eight year old self
1. Should Heinz have stolen the drug? Why / Why not?
No, because stealing is wrong.
2. Would it change anything if Heinz didn't love his wife? Why / Why not?
He probably wouldn't bother trying to save her.
3. Would your answer change if the person was a not his wife, but a stranger? Why / Why not?
No because stealing is wrong, it doesn't matter who it's for.
4. If the wife died, should the police arrest the druggist for murder? Why / Why not?
Not sure an eight year old would even grasp this concept. But no because he didn't actually kill her.
1. Should Heinz have stolen the drug? Why / Why not?
my currant self-Yes I think he should. If I weigh up the consequences the punishment of theft out weighs the death of his beloved wife. go to jail for a little time and coming out to your wife who's alive
my 8 year old self - No, i would be too scared of going to jail
2. Would it change anything if Heinz didn't love his wife? Why / Why not?
My current self - Yes, if he didn't love his wife he may want her to pass away. He may think that going to jail isnt worth it for his wife making the consequences too high
my 8 year old self- no again id be scared of the consequences and getting in trouble
3. Would your answer change if the person was a not his wife, but a stranger? Why / Why not?
My current self - Yes. I would hope that the husband would think that the situation isn't right and would start helping to make changes in the system legally making the drug cheaper and readily available for everyone
my 8 year old self - I wouldn't care to help someone i didn't know if it meant i got in trouble.
4. If the wife died, should the police arrest the druggist for murder? Why / Why not?
My current self - No unfortunately the druggist hasn't done anything illegal, just morally wrong which isn't a crime.
my 8 year old self wouldn't care for the druggist
1. Should Heinz have stolen the drug? Why / Why not?

It could change if Heinz did not love his wife. He might not think that is wife's life was worth going to jail for.
3. Would your answer change if the person was a not his wife, but a stranger? Why / Why not?
I think if it was not somebody you knew or loved, your approach might be different. Maybe you would find another way to get the drug or another way to find the money. You would not be in such a rush for the outcome.
4. If the wife died, should the police arrest the druggist for murder? Why / Why not?
No. It is not a crime to just be an awful human being. He did not commit murder.
1. Should Heinz have stolen the drug? Why / Why not?
a. Yes because I would do anything not matter the consequenses to save someone I love.
b. I would have thought about it but ultimately would have been too scared of what the consequences would have been.

a. & b. Yes, if it was a stranger I wouldn't give much more thought than its sad but not my reponsibility.

1. Should Heinz have stolen the drug? Why / Why not?
a. Yes, Heinz should have stolen the drug bc his wife will die and the druggist is a scumbag and should've done him a deal
b. my eight yo self was naughty and caring so still yes for the same reason. Or he should've done a fundraiser or busked outside the supermarket with a sign and got his friends to also busk and fundraise
2. Would it change anything if Heinz didn't love his wife? Why / Why not?
a. If my husband that I didn't love was going to die I'd still steal it out of respect. It's not right to let someone die just bc you are too scared to express your feelings
b. No it shouldn't change anything she shouldnt die just bc he's lazy
3. Would your answer change if the person was a not his wife, but a stranger? Why / Why not?
a. No, I believe in free healthcare for everyone especially ppl on their deathbeds when there's a clear solution and the only barrier is affordability.
b. maybe he wont need to if he doesnt know who the person is but that person's family should still go steal it
4. If the wife died, should the police arrest the druggist for murder? Why / Why not?
a. 1000% yes, pricing people out of remaining alive should be a crime. #freeluigi
b. Maybe not but probably yes
1. Should Heinz have stolen the drug? Why / Why not?
a: I believe this was the right thing to do because Heinz knew her life was the most important thing.
b: This was the wrong thing to do because you could get caught and go to jail.
2. Would it change anything if Heinz didn't love his wife? Why / Why not?
a: I don't believe It should make a difference because everyone deserves a fair chance to live.

b: If they weren't family, he wouldn't need to risk going to jail.
4. If the wife died, should the police arrest the druggist for murder? Why / Why not?
a: No, the druggist wasn't directly responsible for the life of the wife, but the healthcare system should be better set up to ensure equitable access to the medication.
b: No because the druggist didn't choose for her to die.
